Pediatric Asthma

& Allergies

Asthma is very common in children. In fact, it is one of the most common lung diseases affecting the pediatric population. If undiagnosed and untreated, it can result in missed school days, missed work days for parents and guardians, trips to emergency rooms, and even hospital stays.

The signs of childhood asthma include:

  • Coughing (usually at night)
  • Wheezing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Rapid breathing
  • Chest pains
  • Frequent colds
  • Feeling weak or tire

The root cause of asthma is still not known. However, many factors trigger the symptoms of asthma:

  • Vigorous exercise
  • Weather changes
  • Exposure to air pollution or irritants (smog, aerosol spray, fumes)
  • Exposure to allergens (pollen, dander)
  • Viral infections

The following increases your child’s risk of getting asthma:

  • Family history of allergies and/or asthma
  • Allergies (for many children, an allergic response can trigger asthma symptoms)
  • Frequent respiratory infections
  • Low birth weight
  • Second-hand smoke before and/or after birth

There is no cure for childhood asthma, diagnosing it is very important to improving your child’s quality of life, as proper treatment can alleviate symptoms.
